Join the Museum of the Albemarle for a live program on Saturday, February 26, 2022 at 1 p.m. in our Gaither Auditorium. This program, Freedmen, Surfmen, Heroes, teaches the unique and remarkable story of Keeper Richard Etheridge and the Pea Island Lifesavers. Come hear descendants of the Pea Island Lifesavers tell the incredible and inspiring story of the nation’s first black Keeper and the story of station Pea Island, the only station in the history of the United States Life-Saving Service manned by an all-black crew. This popular creative program uses vivid imagery, sound effects, and historical interpretation of events to bring to life the amazing story Keeper Etheridge and the lifesaving station he commanded, a station that earned the reputation of being one of, if not the best on the coast.
